There are three different foot types described by physical therapists and podiatrists that each play a role with foot mechanics.
There are three different foot types described by physical therapists and podiatrists that each play a role with foot mechanics.
The pronated foot characteristically has a lower arch (flat foot) than the neutral foot and is known to have less stability.
The supinated foot has a higher arch than a neutral foot and has more stability but less shock absorption.
One research article explained that different foot types play a role in a person’s postural control; namely the pronated and supinated foot has poorer postural control through different mechanisms.
Orthotics and over the counter shoe inserts have been known to help with improving foot mechanics and decrease pain in the feet, knees etc. with activity.
One study indicated that 70% of runners who experience lower extremity symptoms reported marked improvements with orthotic use. If you are having some pain in your lower extremity, make sure you are using the proper footwear for your foot type.
